Pollutive ends Nominated for Dutch Design Awards 2020
We are super excited to announce. WOVEN STUDIO and THIJS BIERSTEKER are nominated for the DUTCH DESIGN AWARDS 2020 with our work Pollutive ends.
24 nominees for Dutch Design Awards (DDA) 2020 have been selected. Independent committees of design experts have nominated three projects in each of the following categories: Product, Habitat, Communication, Fashion, Design Research, Service & Systems, Best Commissioning and Young Designer. The winners will be announced from 17 to 24 October in a special DDA Award Show on DDW TV.

POLLUTIVE ENDS | THIJS BIERSTEKER thijsbiersteker.com The impact of one cigarette butt on the ground, the ground water, rivers and oceans is enormous and often unknown. One cigarette butt alone pollutes fifty litres of water; a few cigarette butts in a litre of water cause half of all small ocean life to die. Pollutive Ends brings to life the scientific research into this issue. The interactive installation pumps fifty litres of water a day around a network of pipes containing the exact amount of pollution that comes out of one cigarette butt that ends up in the water. The liquid pulses faster when visitors are present, which presents a hypnotic and confrontational image. From up close, the cigarette butt in the middle becomes clearer and the message hits home. Committee: Thijs Biersteker takes an abstract topic, that is difficult to visualise, and turns it into an almost living organism. In the interactive installation Pollutive Ends, it is really clever how the designer has managed to
transform something so repulsive into something so fascinating and even beautiful. The impact of the installation walks the lines of wonder and yet is direct and unambiguous in its communication. A refreshing and effective approach to a known, perhaps even tired problem, that also motivates direct action. Once you have seen this, you will think twice before ever throwing a cigarette butt on the floor ever again. De impact van één sigarettenpeuk op de grond, het grondwater, rivieren en oceanen is enorm én vaak onbekend. Eén peuk vervuilt in zijn eentje vijftig liter water; een paar peuken in een liter water zorgen ervoor dat de helft van al het kleine oceaanleven doodgaat. Pollutive Ends brengt wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar deze problematiek tot leven. De interactieve installatie pompt dagelijks vijftig liter water rond in een netwerk van buizen met daarin de exacte hoeveelheid vervuiling die uit een sigarettenpeuk komt als deze in het water belandt. De vloeistof pulseert sneller in aanwezigheid van toeschouwers, wat een hypnotiserend en confronterend beeld oplevert. Dichterbij wordt de sigarettenpeuk in het midden duidelijker en komt de boodschap binnen. Commissie: Thijs Biersteker neemt een abstract, moeilijk te visualiseren onderwerp en maakt er een bijna levend uitziend organisme van. Heel knap hoe de ontwerper met de interactieve installatie Pollutive Ends iets afstotelijks toch fascinerend en zelfs mooi weet te maken. De impact van de installatie loopt langs de lijnen van verwondering en is toch rechtstreeks en eenduidig in zijn communicatie. Een heel frisse en effectieve aanpak van een gekend, misschien zelfs uitgekauwd probleem, dat bovendien direct aanzet tot actie.
