ECONTINUUM

by Ecological artist Thijs Biersteker

in collaboration with scientist Stefano Mancuso

at Musée d'ethnographie de Genève

The data-driven sculpture Econtinuum reveals the hidden symbiotic relationships between trees and mycelium that occur beneath the forest floor.

The two enormous pine tree root structures communicate with each other based on data gathered from sensors mounted near each root. Measuring air quality, humidity, CO2 levels, and volatile organic compound the artwork generates the conversation. You see how electric signals are used to warn each other, and how nutrients flow from one side to the other to maintain a healthy balance. As you approach the roots you are invited to participate in the ongoing conversation.

Econtinuum is a "living" artwork, constantly evolving based on real-time data presenting a unique experience each day. Showcasing the power of symbiotic relationships in nature. It shares the most significant lesson to be learned from a forest ecosystem: together, we are stronger.
