ABOUT THE SPEAKER

When he isn’t busy making headlines in publications like Wired Magazine, New Scientist, Fast company, the Guardian or winning Cannes Lions awards and Webby’s, new media artist Thijs Bierstekerspends time putting his unique craft to very good use.

By working at the nexus of art, design, technology and innovation, he creates immersive people-centred experiences. His thought-provoking work often triggers a deeper questioning about key issues in our world, at the same time inducing a state of awe that keeps the viewer suspended into an imaginary parallel dimension, where science has fantastic proportions. One such work is “Plastic Reflectic”, an installation that not only succeeded to draw much needed attention to the consequences of damaging nature, but also won him the prestigious Gold Lumen Prize.

With his work, Thijs fills a much-needed niche, which bridges the gaps between physical and digital, data and emotions, industry and nature. His interdisciplinary craft is authentic and powerful, which is why we asked him to be our guest speaker for the month of June.

Sneak previeuw Volverium

Sneak previeuwing Volverium:

Volverium is the kinetic VR installation made by new media artist Thijs Biersteker in collaboration with Jacco Gardner’s upcoming album. The enchanting planetarium-like installation opens a world of new perspectives (in a world that is getting less perspective) and can transport you to the middle of it, using the live streaming VR at its core.

It’s kinetic motion and colour changes are in sync with the rhythmic and mystic feel of the music performance and will transport you into a network of visuals and colored lights, that will provoke new and unique points of view everywhere you look. The installation is supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL and built together with: Casper van de Meer, Kees Pattel and Melanie Kool.

IFOT X PLASTIC REFLECTIC

You can experience Plastic Reflectic during the whole festival!

Plastic Reflectic (2016) is an interactive kinetic installation that lets the spectator reflect on the concept of our growing plastic problem in our oceans. These plastics move from human waste into nature’s food chain and slowly intertangle with our muscle and fat tissues, turning us slowly into plastic. As an experience, the installation reflects its audience in plastic pixels made from ocean plastics from around the world.

What design Can do: VIRTUAL REALITY FOR A BETTER REALITY

HOW VIRTUAL REALITY COULD CREATE A BETTER REALITY
Hosted by AMP.Amsterdam

Reality is often rough and unforgiving. We would prefer not to encounter the situations where things are bad. But sometimes we will and it may be better to be prepared. This session asks how we can use Virtual Reality (VR) to create empathy and make the world a better place. Virtual Reality has the power to put you in the shoes of others, and experience the distress you hope never to encounter in real life. This session will discuss several groundbreaking VR concepts and analyse what makes them so influential.

Format
Amp. Amsterdam, a leading VR sound studio, and Thijs Biersteker take you through a series of different cases aimed at amplifying empathy with others among the users. You will get behind-the-scenes insights from the makers. After the show there will be three setups to get yourself into trouble or out of it.

Takeaway
Learn how VR can enhance humanity in real life. You will get an idea of how virtual reality can be an empathy machine, allowing audiences and product users to understand the actual consequences of their choices, including for example excessive consumption or social prejudice.

THIS WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE ON MAY 25 AT 14.00 – 16.30 IN THE BOVENKAMER, STADSSCHOUWBURG
